Chikankari was introduced during the Mughal era in Lucknow in the 3rd century AD. It used just white thread on fine muslin back then. The craft evolved under patronage of the Nawabs into the unique art it is today.
Block printing is done before embroidery where hand carved wooden blocks are dipped in dyes and stamped on the fabric. This imprints the Chikankari design outlines consistently to guide the embroidery placement.
Wash the kurta gently by hand in cold water using a mild soap or detergent. Avoid hot water or harsh chemicals. Swirl softly, and squeeze gently without twisting to rinse. Drain excess water without pulling fabric. Air dry flat in the shade, away from sunlight.
Lay the washed kurta flat or hang it on a line in the shade for natural air drying. Turn it inside out so embroidered side faces inwards. This prevents fading from sun exposure. Periodically flip over for even drying on both sides without wrinkles.
Iron inside out on low/medium heat to protect embroidery. Place cloth over the embroidered side while ironing the base. Use steam function sparingly. Iron motifs separately without disturbing details.
Gently scrape off surface threads using a dull butter knife. Soak in warm water and mild detergent for 15-20 minutes. Use an old toothbrush to lightly scrub stains in circular motion. Rinse in cool water till it runs clear.
Prevent sun exposure. Use a scarf when wearing perfumes. Handle motifs gently. Prevent contact with lotions or cosmetics when worn. Check for loose threads and snip them away after each wear.
