It's best to hand wash chikankari garments gently in cold water using a mild detergent or soap. Do not scrub the embroidered fabric and handle with care while washing as the embroidery is delicate.
It's not recommended to machine wash chikankari kurtas as the embroidery may get damaged. The delicate threads and stitches can come loose or get torn in the washing machine. Always hand wash to keep the chikankari work intact.
After washing, rinse thoroughly and gently squeeze out excess water. Lay the garment on a flat surface away from direct sunlight. Let it air dry completely. Avoid hanging chikankari kurtas as the weight may stretch out the embroidery.
Iron the kurta set inside out on the reverse side so the heat doesn't directly touch the embroidered fabric. Use a medium-hot iron and place a cloth over the embroidered part while ironing the kurta.
Fold the kurta set neatly and store in breathable fabric. Keep in cool, dry place away from moisture, heat and dust. Store one piece over another to prevent creasing the embroidery. Avoid tight packing and do not place heavy objects over it.
Dry cleaning is not required too often. Get it dry cleaned only 2-3 times a year to remove stains or dirt that cannot be hand washed. Look for a reputable dry cleaner who can handle delicate fabrics well.
Avoid rubbing, scrubbing or bleaching the fabric. Be gentle while washing, drying and storing. Use a padded hanger to avoid stretching the embroidery. Get small holes or loose threads repaired promptly.
